How to be Sure You’re Paying the Right Amount for Care
Our Summary of Health Plan Payments document can help you compare a recent doctor or hospital bill with your Blue Cross plan to help ensure your paying the right amount.
On your daily trip to the mailbox, you find a bill from your doctor or hospital for a recent visit. As you open it and look over the charges, you may be wondering whether this is all correct. We’ve got an easy way to make sure you’re paying the right amount.
You can compare the provider’s bill to your Blue Cross plan’s Summary of Health Plan Payments (SHPPs). By doing that you can verify:
- The amount billed for each procedure
- Adjustments made in the charges
- Payments that Blue Cross made
- The amount you owe the provider
The Summary of Health Plan Payments is not a bill from Blue Cross. It simply shows a breakdown of how claims were processed, including your copayments, deductible, and coinsurance.
These summaries are generated once a month, usually on the first business day of the month. You can get them by logging into the Member Resource Center. It is important to note that we no longer automatically mail these summaries to members. Providing them electronically reduces paper use by 2.6 million sheets a year. We will mail the summary to you if there was a denial or if there is an amount owed to the provider other than the copay.
Checking the Blue Cross Summary of Health Plan Payments before you pay the provider’s bill will give you peace of mind that you’re paying the right amount. If you do find a discrepancy, you can send us a secure message through the Member Resource Center, email , or call us at the number on the back of your member ID card and we’ll be happy to look into it.
